Crowding is a condition in which there is not enough room in the dental arch, so teeth erupt outside the arch, shift or rotate around their axis. The lower incisors and upper canines are affected most often. The causes are narrow jaws, early loss of milk teeth, congenital bite features, mouth breathing with ENT problems and the eruption of wisdom teeth.

Crowded teeth are hard to clean: plaque builds up between them, caries and gum inflammation develop faster and bad breath appears. Uneven load leads to wear, gum recession and loose teeth. Crowding is also a frequent companion of distal, deep and open bites.

Treatment depends on the degree: for mild crowding aligners or braces with interproximal stripping — minimal polishing of the contacts between teeth — are enough; for pronounced crowding individual teeth may need to be removed to create room. Care rules

  • Interdental brushes and floss

    While the teeth are crowded, clean between them with interdental brushes and floss daily — it protects the gums before and during treatment.

  • Wisdom teeth

    Follow the doctor's advice on wisdom teeth: their eruption can shift the incisors again.

  • A retainer for life

    The lower incisors tend to drift back — do not remove the retainer without your orthodontist's approval.

Questions and answers

Will teeth have to be removed?

Not always. For mild to moderate crowding room is created by arch expansion and stripping. Extraction is planned only for a significant space deficit — the decision is visible on the 3D model.

Can crowding be fixed with aligners?

Yes, it is one of the most common cases for aligners. Even pronounced crowding is treated with trays and attachments under a staged plan.

Why do teeth crowd again after treatment?

Because of abandoning the retainer or wisdom teeth erupting. A fixed retainer on the lower incisors and monitoring of the wisdom teeth preserve the result.
