Self-ligating braces in Yerevan

Braces without elastics: the wire is held by built-in clips and slides freely in the slots. Less friction, less discomfort, easier hygiene and shorter treatment.

Self-ligating (ligature-free) braces are a modern system for correcting the bite without traditional elastic ligatures. Instead of rings, the wire is held by compact built-in clips. This design is more comfortable to wear, more discreet, causes less discomfort in the first weeks and simplifies care.

Ligation is how the wire is attached to the bracket. In classic models it is held by elastic rings, which make the system bulkier and more visible, collect plaque and need replacing every 3–4 weeks. In self-ligating systems the doctor simply snaps the clip shut: friction drops, the wire slides freely and moves the teeth gently using light forces.

Self-ligating braces come in metal and ceramic. At iOrtho in Yerevan we work with the Damon Q and Damon Clear systems and choose the option after digital diagnostics. If a bracket comes off it can be re-bonded, and if damaged, replaced.

Benefits

  • Faster treatment

Without ligature friction teeth move more physiologically — in similar cases treatment is 4–6 months shorter.

  • Easier hygiene

Smooth brackets with tightly closed clips trap less food and plaque.

  • Less pain

Light-force principle: the pressure is constant and gentle, so soreness after wire changes is milder and passes sooner.

  • Fewer visits

No elastics to replace every 3–4 weeks: an appointment every 4–6 weeks that takes less time.

  • More often without extractions

The design encourages arch expansion, which often makes it possible to avoid extractions to create space.

Indications

  • Crowding, gaps in the arch and between the central incisors
  • Teeth erupting outside the arch
  • Distal, mesial, open, deep or cross bite
  • Wanting shorter treatment and fewer visits

Treatment stages

  1. 1.

    Consultation and diagnostics

Orthodontic examination, CT, joint assessment, photo protocol. A treatment plan on metal or ceramic self-ligating braces is drawn up.

  2. 2.

    Preparing the mouth

Treatment of caries and gums where indicated and a mandatory professional cleaning.

  3. 3.

    Digital modelling

An intraoral scan in a few minutes. The model is used to calculate bracket positions, each tooth's path and the timeline.

  4. 4.

    Fitting the system

The brackets are bonded to conditioned enamel, the wire is placed and the clips are closed. One jaw first, the second 1–2 months later.

  5. 5.

    Scheduled visits

Every 4–6 weeks — stiffer wires and activation of extra elements. The doctor sets the intervals.

  6. 6.

    Removal and retention

After 12–36 months the braces come off, the enamel is polished, fixed retainers are bonded immediately and night trays are made.

Care rules

  • After every meal

Brush all surfaces; if you cannot, rinse with water. Use interdental brushes and a water flosser.

  • Food in the first weeks

Reduce chewing load: soft food, hard things in pieces. Avoid sticky food.

  • Professional cleaning

Every 3–4 months with a hygienist.

  • Bad habits

Do not bite nails or pens, do not open packaging with your teeth. If a bracket comes off — see the doctor at once.

Questions and answers

How do self-ligating braces differ from regular ones?

By having no ligatures. Elastics collect plaque, complicate hygiene and stop the wire sliding. Clips apply less pressure, reduce discomfort, allow fewer visits and shorten treatment by roughly 20%.

Can I have ceramic on top and metal on the bottom?

Yes, it is common practice. For example, Damon Clear on the upper jaw and Damon Q on the lower — especially with heavy lower crowding.

Self-ligating braces or aligners for an adult?

Both work. Aligners are more discreet, easier to clean and need fewer visits, but require wearing discipline. Braces cost less and work without your involvement. The orthodontist makes the final call after an examination.
