Aligners or Braces: Which to Choose for Bite Correction
3 min read
Aligners and braces are the two main ways to correct a bite and straighten teeth. Both methods work, but in different ways, and each has its own strengths. Let's look at how they differ and in which situations an iOrtho orthodontist is more likely to recommend one or the other.
What is the difference between aligners and braces
Braces are a fixed system: brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by an archwire. The wire tends to return to its preset shape and gradually pulls the teeth along with it. Braces cannot be removed on your own; they work continuously.
Aligners are a series of clear removable trays. Each subsequent tray differs slightly from the previous one and moves the teeth step by step toward the planned position. They must be worn 20–22 hours a day and removed only for eating and oral hygiene.
- Visibility. Braces are visible to others even in a ceramic version; aligners are practically invisible.
- Control of tooth movement. With braces, the doctor controls movement through bracket positioning and wire stiffness; with aligners, a digital 3D setup models each tooth's movement step by step.
- Versatility. Braces have been studied for decades and suit the most complex cases; the capabilities of aligners keep expanding, including through the use of attachments.
When aligners are chosen more often
Aesthetics and discretion
Clear trays are barely noticeable in conversation. This matters for people who speak in public, work with clients, or simply do not want to draw attention to their treatment.
Comfort in everyday life
Aligners have no sharp edges, hooks, or wires, so they do not irritate the cheeks and lips. There are no food restrictions: you put the trays in their case and eat as usual. Getting used to them typically takes 1–5 days, and the effect on speech is minimal.
When braces may be preferable
Severe malocclusions
For severe crowding, significant rotations of teeth around their axis, or preparation for orthognathic surgery, braces remain a reliable tool with a predictable outcome.
Independence from patient discipline
Braces always work: they cannot be left at home or lost. Aligners worn less than 20 hours a day simply do not deliver results. If you are not sure you can keep to the schedule, tell your doctor honestly.
Budget
Metal braces are usually the most affordable option: the technology is well established and the material is inexpensive. Aligners require individual digital planning and printing of every set. You will learn the exact cost of treatment at our clinic after diagnostics.
Effectiveness and treatment time
With proper planning, both methods are effective. The advantage of aligners is the ability to see the final position of the teeth before treatment starts: the doctor sets the final position of each tooth in the software, and the algorithm divides the path into safe steps of 0.25–0.33 mm.
Treatment time depends on complexity, not on the type of system. Simple cases with small gaps take an average of 6–12 months, moderate cases 12–18 months, and complex cases 18–36 months. Because they act continuously, braces sometimes work a few months faster.
How to make the decision
At the consultation, an iOrtho orthodontist will examine your mouth, determine the type of bite, assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and existing restorations, and perform digital diagnostics. You will then receive an estimated treatment time with braces and with aligners for your case, along with a clear explanation of the pros and cons of each option.
Frequently asked questions
Which hurts more, braces or aligners?
Trays cover the entire dental arch and apply even pressure; the force is minimal and precisely dosed, so you feel only slight pressure in the first days after changing a tray. With braces, discomfort after wire activation is more pronounced.
Can a Class III (underbite) be corrected with aligners?
Yes, if it is a dentoalveolar form, where the teeth themselves are positioned incorrectly. In the skeletal form, both braces and aligners are of limited use, and surgical treatment is required.
What to choose when a canine is erupting incorrectly?
Modern aligner systems handle a displaced canine as effectively as braces. The choice depends on your preferences and your readiness to follow the wearing schedule.
